In late May Paris is an ultimate point of destination for tennis lovers rather than for shopaholics – Paris is a home for world-famous Roland Garros French Open, one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. Two-week Roland Garros tennis triumph is hosted by Porte d’Auteuil. This sports arena bears the name of the former tennis club member, a French hero, an early French aviator and a fighter pilot Roland Garros (1888 – 1918) who gained fame for making the first non-stop flight across the Mediterranean Sea and died five weeks before the end of the World War I.
Court Philippe Chatrier is a Roland Garros’s centrepiece and principal venue, seating 15,000, followed by another major venue Сourt Suzanne Lenglen (a French tennis player) seating 10,000 spectators. The Roland Garros Stadium appears to be quite small to host all tennis lovers willing to enjoy the most spectacular battles with their own eyes as court battles are known as the most exciting and most elegant events.
Roland Garros is one of the oldest Grand Slam tournaments after Wimbledon and US Open. All events are held on hard-class clay courts. As the only premier clay court tennis championship of the Grand Slam tournaments, Roland Garros is a final event for clay court tennis season and is a motherland for clay-court tennis for many people. Roland Garros history dates back to the championship reserved for the French and members of French tennis clubs only.
The tournament was not very popular at the very beginning as it was not opened for the best world players. Today everybody wants to attend its events. According to experts, Serena Williams, the last-year Roland Garros winner, is not in her optimal condition yet and is expected to show her best at Paris courts.
Male Grand Slam participants include Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stanislas Wawrinka, Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Andrey Kuznetsov, Teimuraz Gabashvili, Evgeny Donskoy, Mikhail Youzhny, and Dmitry Tursunov.
Rafael Nadal, the Spanish professional tennis player, is an ultimate winner of the French tournament.
The American and former world no. 1 Andy Roddick confessed how he believed upcoming French Open will be crucial for Spanish professional Rafael Nadal: ‘I think the main question for Rafael Nadal is whether he could win Roland Garros again. To suffer a defeat from Novak would be very painful for him. It’s a very special moment to watch Novak at upcoming French Open. Roland Garros 2016 will be decisive for Rafael Nadal´s career.’
