Not only do we love things beautiful, we also enjoy things spectacular. Sports, for one thing, are entertaining and appealing. 2016 is going to be full of splendid sporting events. Never before have there been so many international tournaments in sport history. We have prepared a chronological list of the biggest international sports events in 2016.




The Rio Olympics, European and World football and ice hockey championships will undoubtedly draw the biggest crowds.

  • 25 -31 January: European Figure Skating Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.
  • 26 February – 6 March: II Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway.
  • 28 March – 3 April: World Figure Skating Championships in Boston, USA.
  • 29 April – 15 May: World Ice Hockey Championship in Russia.
  • 10 June – 10 July: European Football Championship in France.
  • 30 June – 22 July: the 103rd Tour de France (France – Qatar).
  • 9 August: UEFA Super Cup (41st edition).
  • 5 – 21 August: Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • 17 September – 1 October: World Cup of Hockey in Toronto, Canada.

The Rio Olympics and UEFA European Championship are arguably the most popular.




The 2016 UEFA European Championship (Euro 2016) will be held in France from 10 June to 10 July 2016. It will be the 15th edition of the UEFA European Championship. It is the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Europe organized by UEFA. For the first time, the European Championship final tournament will be contested by 24 teams, according to the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee of September 2008. There are six groups with four teams in each.

Group winners, runners-up and best four third-placed teams have made it to the play-off stage. The opening match will be played on 25 June at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne. The matches will be played in Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Marseille, Saint-Denis and Nice. It will be the third time that France hosts the tournament. The final match will take place on 10 July at Stade de France in Saint-Denis.




Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is an important event for the whole world but it has special significance for South America. This is going to be the first official Olympic Games to be held in South America and second in Latin America after 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. This times the Games will take place in and around Rio, namely Maracana, Copacabana, Deodoro and Barra. The 2016 Summer Olympic program features lots of popular sports: rowing, basketball, boxing, wrestling, cycling, racing, gymnastics, horse riding, rugby, triathlon, weightlifting, martial arts.

The most popular with the Brazilians are all kinds of beach and water sports and games, like beach volleyball, water polo, swimming, jumping. You know, Copacabana beaches are always full of people playing beach volleyball, and next year is going to see real professionals! Moreover, can you imagine Brazil without football? No way! Even at the time of the Olympic Games! Football is Brazil’s heart and soul!
